Restomod cars

Da hell is restomod?

It is a vintage looking car that has modern technology underneath.

Does this have anything to do with vintage, industrial or loft style furniture? No, they are cool as hell though!

Wanna see examples?

Here they are!

ICON derelict cars
These are undoubtedly my favorite ones: the derelicts. Just look at them! You either hate or love them. I belong to the latter group.

So the process is as follows described by Jonathan Ward, the owner of the company ICON: they are constantly on the lookout for vintage cars. Now the trick is that they are only interested in those ones with a nice patina on them.

Original and unrestored as Jay Leno would put it.

Then they keep practically the shell and the interior only. Everything else goes to the dumpster. The body gets laser-scanned, and they have a company to build the undercarriage for them. Basically, all of the technology is brand-new: engine, suspension, brakes. Everything that a car enthusiast is looking for to get that nice driving experience.

So the real coolness comes to play after you got into the car: the interior looks totally original. Same buttons, switches, everything that was there when the car was produced.

Is it really the same?

Not really,.

Behind all the gauges and switches you will find modern technology. Climate control, Bluetooth, all the gadgets you can find in today's cars. But all that is wrapped into this great vintage packaging.

Just take a look at these videos. Dope, right?

ICON Derelict Wagon

ICON Derelict Rolls, this is their latest creation

911 Porsche - Bisimoto Engineering
At one point, it held a 1000 horsepower. The car weighs 2400 pounds (1088 kilos). The builder found it too scary so changed the turbos, and DOWNGRADED it to have 800 BHP only. Un-fucking-believable.

A classic example of restomod: started out as a blank shell of a 911 from 1976. All the inner parts represent modern technology. Love the observation of Matt Farah from The Smoking Tire where he says the turbos on the back look "like a pair of nuts".

Insane vintage looking 911 Porsche

Motorcycle-engined cars
Not necessarily a vintage thing, but it can be sometimes. A Mini with a bike engine? A Honda S600 from 1964, with double of the original horsepower and lending its heart from a Honda CBR 1000RR motorcycle?

Not difficult to see why I picked this little Honda: the guy just didn't care about the looks. He rather hot-rodded the thing by putting this superb engine in it, great brakes and suspension.
It is a derelict car by concept, even though it was not built by ICON mentioned here earlier.

Datsun 260Z - Karotta
This one belongs to Gabor Bazso, who has been around Hungary's favorite online automotive journal, Totalcar, for decades now.

This Datsun 260Z has a modern Nissan engine under the hood, same one that the Nissan 350Z was equipped with, from the factory. This was built to be a toy for the track.

Great looking vintage racer

Rolls Royce, and Mazda RX-7, in a very different view
And finally, a really silly one. This young chap doesn't give a fuck when it comes to a car build.

He really doesn't give a shit, right?

Wrong.

He knows exactly what he's doing.

Or in other words: it takes a lot of work to look that bad :).

The silliest vintage Rolls you will ever see <

The Zero fucks given RX-7
